Well done Roger White for getting 25th in the Contender European Championships with 92 boats entered. Well done Tony Cooper for coming 9th in the Solo Inland Championships with 107 boats entered. We won't mention the other KG sailors as they didn't do so well! Well done Tony Cooper for winning the KG Solo Open Meeting - a closely fought match with Steve Ede. (Next time think about the poor old guys!) |

Have you ever fancied having a go at windsurfing, or you have tried before and just couldn’t manage to stand up? Well I tried it about 5 years ago whilst on holiday, after watching a demo from someone who made it look so easy. The kit was old style long boards, as much as I tried I could not manage to stand up on the board for more than a few seconds, as soon as I tried to uphaul the sail, I lost balance and fell in. After several attempts I gave up, through shear exhaustion. Re-fuelled and eager I tried the next day and actually managed to sail for about 3 meters before falling off. I was so pleased after being so frustrated the previous day. Six months later, I decided to book onto a beginners windsurfing course and was instantly hooked on the sport. Windsurfing is a fantastic sport, challenging, rewarding and thrilling. The thrill of getting up on the plane just skimming across the water at full tilt in a harness and in the foot straps is a fantastic experience. It took me three years to get there but I enjoyed the journey. Despite what you may think, windsurfing is not a seasonal sport. With a good winter wetsuit, it is just about bearable to go out with a wind-chill as low as 5o C. Windsurfing is for all ages in fact we have one regular who is in his late 70's! In terms of equipment, I didn’t actually buy any until I was confident to use an intermediate board. We have club beginner equipment at KGSC that can be hired for a small fee. I joined KGSC when it re-opened in 2006 and have learned so much from fellow windsurfers. We have a good buddy network, for those non club days. Generally when the wind gets up there will be at least someone in the network who can buddy with you.
As a result of selling on a surplus dinghy, I am pleased to announce that the club now has some modern wide style boards which are very stable and forgiving, making the initial get up and get going stage that much easier. Once confident on a wide-style board you can progress onto a club long-board.
I plan is to run Beginner Windsurfing coaching sessions on Tuesday evenings and possibly some Saturday mornings, over the Summer period. The course fees are cut-price for new or existing members. The duration of the course is 12 hours, spread over five to six weeks. Cost includes hire of equipment. I will accept under 18 year olds but with the strict understanding that a parent or guardian is present. If you are interested then please contact me (Wayne Hill) in the contacts section of our website. www.kgsc.org.uk
